I have a lot of hands-up in the air, smiling like I just don’t care photos from Boston. But I also have about 2x as many photos that look like this (or worse!). Monday was my most favorite marathon to date. It was also the hardest marathon route I’ve raced on. When I started this page I promised I would keep things as real as they got. I’m also not embarrassed to admit the following because I think it happens more often than we think so here goes...the drips running down my leg in this picture? A combination of sweat but mostly pee. I had to take in so much liquid to deal with the 90% humidity and bright, beating down sun. I don’t think my body quite knew what to do with all the extra liquid and so yes, I probably peed myself 3 times in the race unintentionally after my body lost all control. Yes, I felt gross, but if that’s what it took to keep my body hydrated throughout that race so I could run the race I trained for, I’d do it all over again, literally. Marathons are hard. They push our body over the edge and test every single one of our limits. My body was giving me a lot of signals that it was not happy from miles 17-26.2 but my mind was so determined to cross that line with a new PR that it took over. If something like this were to have happened in the past, I probably would’ve shut down, but this race was special and I’m still trying to process the entire thing from start to finish to learn from it for the future. . At the starting line of 26 today 🎉 . Getting to celebrate 26 years of life with 26.2 miles in the @bostonmarathon was the best birthday present I could’ve asked for. 25 was a defining year for me; a few highlights... 1️⃣ Bought a house 2️⃣ First BQ at the @berlinmarathon 3️⃣ Became an RRCA certified running coach and started my own business 4️⃣ Gained so much mental strength and courage in all areas of my life 5️⃣ Ran PRs in the 10K, 13.1, and 26.2 6️⃣ Ran my first Boston Marathon 🦄 . 25 was a year of positive change and I am excited to see what a new year brings! Boston, your city and your streets have stolen my heart. This was such a special weekend and I’m thankful to be heading home with an 8-minute marathon PR and to have fallen in love with the distance all over again. Thank you to my parents and to my amazing husband for coming out to support me as I chased down the unicorn. It wasn’t easy, marathons never are, but I trusted in my training and just kept putting one foot in front of the other betting on myself even as temperatures climbed into numbers I haven’t seen since September. It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, yet truly one of the most special. I teared up running through Hopkinton seeing all the people who had come out to support the runners, I fist-pumped with the girls in the Wellesley scream tunnel, I smiled real big seeing my family just before the Newton Fire Station, I gritted my teeth as the sun was beating down as I climbed Heartbreak Hill, and I celebrated as I ran down Boylston looking towards the most epic marathon finish line I’ve ever seen. No case of the Mondays tomorrow! I’m far too calm for what’s about to go down but it’s a good place to be. I’m fit. I’m prepared. I’m ready. I still feel like I’m dreaming a bit but the work is done and this is the victory dance. Tomorrow, we race! 💙🦄💛 a 7-year journey to get to the Boston Marathon and I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to run my heart out in my dream marathon. I’ve had a handful of people reach out over the last several days telling me that they never thought Boston was in the cards for them and then they saw people like myself start at a 4:10 marathon and work my way down to qualify and started believing that maybe they too would catch their unicorn. My answer is always, you can. Dream really, really big, work super hard (and smart!), believe you can, and anything is possible; this I truly believe and can attest to🏃🏽‍♀️ .
